Getting Started with Pokémon Survivor Burst
A first-session route from the title screen to your first Classic clear.
Pokémon Survivor Burst is a free bullet-heaven fangame: you pick one Pokémon, walk through a map, and watch attacks fire on their own while swarms close in. The fantasy is Pokémon. The loop is Vampire Survivors. If you treat it like a story RPG you will stand still, get surrounded, and wonder why the Burst gauge never mattered. This page is the first-hour route after you have a working build.
If the ZIP is not on disk yet, stop here and follow the download and install guide. Windows is the straightforward path. macOS players must keep the existing Data folder when they overwrite a patch. Mobile is offered, but ClessioTV has not fully tested it. Once the game launches, set a player name — version 2.0 added naming, and a later 3.0 compatibility patch exists specifically so that name survives future ZIPs.
What the first screen is asking
Version 4.5 put the game-mode list on the front of the game. That does not mean every mode is yours. Classic is the on-ramp. Rush unlocks after you clear Classic with that same Pokémon. Tower unlocks after Rush with that same Pokémon. Endless is a 4.5 mode with a separate shop and currency. If you mash into Tower on a fresh file you will bounce off requirements that are documented in the game modes guide. Start Classic.
The starter confirmation panel is more honest than most fangames. Mudkip, the Water example on the official screenshots, shows Type, HP 112, Speed 2.32, skill Water Pulse, and passive Damp Recovery: bouncing water shots plus an 8% HP recover clause. Read those four lines for whoever you pick. A kit that looks cute and a kit that fills the screen are not the same thing. The starter Pokémon page goes deeper on Mudkip because the public Classic leaderboard is stacked with Mudkip names — Novoxy at level 331 with 6.5 million is the headline, not a rumor.
You do not need Mudkip to learn the game. You do need a kit whose basic skill is visible. If you cannot tell whether you are hitting, you cannot tell whether a bonus did anything.
The combat loop in one paragraph
You move. Attacks fire without a separate fire button, the same way Vampire Survivors does. Experience gems or their local equivalent drop from defeated enemies. On level-up you choose an extra attack, a passive, or a modifier. Somewhere in that pile is Burst — a named ultimate, not a slightly bigger auto. Hold it for a dense pack or a boss window, not for the first three Slugma that walk onto the grass. The Burst system page is the mid-game version of this paragraph.
Positioning still matters even with auto-fire. The official combat shots show ice-card walls, bouncing shots, and overlapping hitboxes. Standing in a choke is free damage. Standing in a donut of projectiles is a restart. The controls guide lists menu prompts; in the field your job is to kite the swarm around your own patterns.
First Classic goals (not a speedrun)
Play one Pokémon until Classic ends or you die with a clear lesson. Do not hop fighters every death. Unlocks and mode gates are per Pokémon, so a 12-minute Mudkip run teaches more than four 3-minute samples.
Aim for these outcomes in the first session:
- Finish a Classic run or reach a boss you can describe.
- Trigger Burst at least twice on purpose.
- Note which bonuses actually changed the screen.
- Open the in-run or post-run details so you know where skills live — players on Eevee Expo asked for a live skill list, so do not assume the HUD will babysit you.
- If the frame rate stutters, open Options (added in 2.5) and drop effects before you blame the kit.
After a clear, stay on that Pokémon and look at Rush. After Rush, Tower. Do not farm Endless first; it is a 4.5 sink with its own shop, not the tutorial.
Unlocks you should ignore on day one
The roster expands when you complete challenges during runs. That is the long game, and it is why the unlock Pokémon guide and unlock checklist exist. Sableye’s condition was bugged and later fixed. Dratini’s requirement was reworked in 3.0. Regional evolutions (Gallade, Hisuian Typhlosion, Alolan Raichu) need extra steps. None of that belongs in hour one. Get a Classic clear, then chase challenges.
Kecleon’s Upgrade Shop is the other trap. Shop Core is a permanent roguelite tree paid with fragments. Completing standard upgrades unlocks more of the tree. Spend after you understand Burst, not instead of learning Burst. Details sit in evolutions and Kecleon.
How to use the gameplay video on this page
TheDuoDesign’s “Fun Take on Vampire Survivors! | Pokemon Survivor Burst” is a real session, posted from the Eevee Expo thread. Watch it for pacing, not as a frame-perfect route. You should see the same loop this page describes: one Pokémon, automatic attacks, crowding, and bonus picks. If your build looks nothing like that, you launched the wrong ZIP or you are in a mode you have not unlocked.
After the first clear
Compare your score on the in-game board (Sort and Filter keys are on the leaderboard tool page) or on the web board at drchips.fr without launching the game. Then read the tier list with a skeptic’s eye — it is an early-meta snapshot, not an official ranking. Patch notes from 2.0 through 4.5 live under updates. Discord is the bug desk; the links hub has the invite.
Pokémon Survivor Burst is a non-commercial fan project. It is not affiliated with Nintendo, Game Freak, or The Pokémon Company. Play it like a live indie survival game: keep the Data folder, reread patch notes when a new ZIP drops, and let Classic teach the kit before you chase every regional form.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What should I do in the first hour?
Install from the download guide, start Classic, learn Burst, and finish one run on a single starter.
Is Mudkip required?
No, but Mudkip’s kit is clearly documented and currently dominates the Classic leaderboard. Use it if you want a readable Water Pulse pattern.
Why are Rush and Tower locked?
They unlock per Pokémon: Classic opens Rush, Rush opens Tower. See the game modes guide.
Can I play with friends in the same run?
No. Pokémon Survivor Burst is single-player. Scores post to an online leaderboard, but there is no shared session.
Where do I report bugs?
Use the official Discord listed on the links hub and check patch notes before redownloading.
